HELP! The '/var/adm/message' file increase every few seconds???

First, I would do a ps -aef |grep bootpd to see how the command is running. Next, to keep the file from growing, I believe you can send the output to /dev/null by linking the file there, as follows.
ln -s /var/adm/messages /dev/null
When you eventually fix the problem, then remove the link.
Now, I would read the man page for bootpd. It will tell you a great deal.
I wouldn't necessarily do this step, but you can to stop the messages. Next, if you choose to you can edit the /etc/inetd.conf file and comment out the line for that. Also, in /etc/services.
OR you can kill and restart the bootpd daemon if you need it to be running.

kill PID # for bootpd
/usr/lbin/bootpd -s
Try these steps and get back...

Somehow someone created a file named '-ov' in the root directory.
Given the name, the how was probably the result of some cpio command they bozo'ed.
I've tried a number of different ways to get rid of it using * and ? wildcards, '\' escape patterns etc.. They all fail with " illegal option --... (3 Replies)

ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1) NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename... DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code: (-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep. If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked. EXIT CODE
