kde and gnome are like front ends to the xfree86 gui server. xfree86 is what unix users use to provide a Graphical User Interface. kde and gnome are just two different programs that you can download and install and use them as your gui. some people like one over the other because one may have more options like customization, while still others prefer one over the other because of its stability, it comes down to your personal prefrence.

I've just done a brand new full clean install of OPenSUSE 10 and thought I'd take a look at Gnome. Having spent a day playing with it I've decided I prefer the familiarity I have with KDE. Difference between logout from Gnome and Telnet

Hi, I have a java process started as a background job from Gnome Shell and logs out, that process is killed whereas when I started the same process from a telnet console and then logs out of the telnet session, that process is running properly. gnome-about [--gnome-version] [gnome-std-options] DESCRIPTION
The GNOME introductory dialog displays a list of the GNOME contributors, and provides links to some useful GNOME websites. OPTIONS
The following options are supported: --gnome-version Display information on this GNOME version. gnome-std-options Standard options available for use with most GNOME applications. See gnome-std-options(5). EXAMPLES
