use a filter via a script
You don't have to do anything for the EXTERN group. Just create the alias in the /etc/aliases file.

For the INTERN group, I would use a script as a filter.
Direct all mail from this alias INTERN into the script. Then if the email address meets your criteria for the xyz.com then allow the email to go. Otherwise, redirect the email back to the sender or send them a standard denial email.
In /etc/aliases, where testscript is your script that checks for the email address. You may have to put the script put in a certain directory for this to work. On my systems it is in /usr/local/bin as a default for sendmail scripts.
Yours may be different.
#vi /etc/aliases
...
...
#Local Aliases
INTERN: "|testscript"

I apologize for asking what I'm sure is a basic question, but I have an automated script that will send a file using sendmail to a list of e-mail accounts.
When one or more of those e-mail accounts is bad, it bounces the message back to the account that is executing the script.

mailer.conf -- configuration file for mailwrapper(8) DESCRIPTION
The file /etc/mail/mailer.conf contains a series of lines of the form name program [arguments ...] The first word of each line is the name of a program invoking mailwrapper(8). (For example, on a typical system /usr/sbin/sendmail would be a symbolic link to mailwrapper(8), as would newaliases(1) and mailq(1). Thus, name might be ``sendmail'' or ``newaliases'' etc.) The second word of each line is the name of the program to actually execute when the first name is invoked. The entire reason this program exists is a crock. Instead, a command for how to submit mail should be standardized, and all the "behave dif- ferently if invoked with a different name" behavior of things like mailq(1) should go away. BSD
