What exactly are you looking for?
There are some programs that will do nearly the same thing as most Windows programs - sometimes better.
Mandrake distribution of Linux is commonly suggested for newbies because of ease of installation, although I've never used it. I have used Redhat a lot, and have to say 7.3 is a pretty clean version.
You may also try procuring another hard drive, and set the machine up as a dual boot (yes, you can dual boot from the same hard drive, but it's a little more straighforward for a newbie to set it up on another free drive, rather than repartition and risk losing data) until you make a choice either way.
Please post back with any specific questions you may have.

NAME
IO::Socket::UNIX - Object interface for AF_UNIX domain sockets

In addition to the key-value pairs accepted by IO::Socket, "IO::Socket::UNIX" provides.
Type Type of socket (eg SOCK_STREAM or SOCK_DGRAM)
Local Path to local fifo
Peer Path to peer fifo
Listen Create a listen socket
If the constructor is only passed a single argument, it is assumed to be a "Peer" specification.
