This is the book I used to get up PHP+Apache. As I recall, I was able to get it up and running very quickly after getting the book. I think they explain in better detail than the README, plus I need the MySQL info and they have a chapter on installing MySQL as well. This forum runs on Apache with PHP and MySQL, BTW.

mysql_get_proto_info - Get MySQL protocol info

Warning This extension is deprecated as of PHP 5.5.0, and will be removed in the future. Instead, the MySQLi or PDO_MySQL extension should be used. Retrieves the MySQL protocol. o $ link_identifier -The MySQL connection. If the link identifier is not specified, the last link opened by mysql_connect(3) is assumed.
