I am using bourne shell.
I did go on the FAQ site but I dont see an example in which we are trying to capture output generated by a script command
s into a variable. Notice the bold S!
. What I mean is, I need to capture output fromt the ftp command dir $FILE as this will tell me if the file exists on the ftp server.

I have the following line in my script:
$sftpcmd $rmthost <<COMMANDS>> $sftplog 2>&1
For some reason this is not capturing the errors from sftp, they go to the file attached to the cron entry
ie
mm hh dd MM * /myscript > cron.out
any idea why?

I'm having trouble capturing output from the following command on AIX:
grpck -n ALL > error.out
It gives me the results on the screen but my file is blank.
I have no trouble capturing output from "ls > ls.out", but doesn't seem to work with the grpck command.
Any ideas?

LR_ENVIRONMENT.IN(1) LogReport's Lire Documentation LR_ENVIRONMENT.IN(1)
NAME
lr_environment - Export Lire configuration in shell script form
SYNOPSIS
eval `lr_environment`
DESCRIPTION
The lr_environment command is used to import the Lire configuration in Lire shell scripts.
All of Lire configuration variables will be written in a format that can be evaled by the shell.
Shell scripts don't usually have to use that command, since it is done by the defaults file sourced by each command.
The old names used by when the configuration was done in shell script are also exported by this script for backward compatibility.
