I second that these errors are usually wrong or corrupt data

I'm not sure what else to suggest, I just knew that I sometimes try to tar tapes that are cpio & get that error.

There is a slight chance you can get the "tar: directory checksum error " error if it was created with GNU tar and trying to read it with tar from SUN.

According to SunSolve, you can get GNU tar utility for 2.6 at ftp://nce.sun.ca/pub/freeware/sparc/2.6/tar-1.12-sol26-sparc-local.gz]GNU tar from SUN (ftp)[/URL]

Try it since nothing else seems to be working.

Thanks for all your help on this one guys.

I applied patches, installed GNUtar, tried other backup/restore commands...but not joy!

I'm now have to go and make my case for the data being corrupt!!!

Cheers again
Richard
