Is that suppose to be "system could not read". If so, can you post the message (it may be in /var/adm/messages or possibly in the output of dmesg)

I had a vaguely similar problem with HP-UX 10.20 a while back.
I could log in as root, but VUE (X Windows) wouldn't start, and I got a similar error when trying to log in from console.
Check the permissions to the / directory, and also /usr, /bin, /etc, etc...
In my case, I had inadvertantly changed the permissions on / to 500, as opposed to 555. Use "ls -ld /" to find the perms to /.

I'm with LivinFree, ~ is your home directory and the root's home directory is /. You need a "chmod 755 /" to fix this.

Yep, I had the same thing happen. I changed the parms on the / directory by accident and finally figured it out 4 hours later.

Sounds like a classic permissions problem.

It was just a permissions issue. I did a chmod 755 / and it did the trick. I can't believe I never thought to check the permissions of / . I was checking the permissions of every file and directory I could possibly think was related to authentication and security and everything checked out OK. I'm glad you guys could help and I thank you all. I would have never thought to check the permissions on /. I guess I hould have found out what chmod ~ did when it executed and didn't return any error messages. Oh well .... thanks again.

Yeah, I spent hours checking every file and directory permission I could find, only to find out it was the most obvious (20.20 hindsight, of course)...
Glad you didn't reinstall!

permission question
My permissions on my passwd and shadow, and group are all 644, and a lot of files in / are set to 777 or 775, where can I go to find out what they should be? Because I'm completely locked out of my user accounts, INCLUDING ROOT, at the windows login, can get to single user mode and mount the c0t0d0s0 partition and then modify it, but can't LOGIN at any point. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a permissions probem on some file that authenticates login.
