SCO and VMware

Jeroenix have you found solution to your problem yet? I have very similar situation over here with SCO/Ghost and VMWare. Thanks

Hi,

No, due to other pressing job assignments I have put this project in the freezer for now.

The best I could do was to download the latest 5.07 boot disk, and install it using the 5.04 CDROM (like the various guides suggest). My plan was, to then restore the entire application into the virtual 5.04 server.

However, on (succesful!) installation completion, I got a kernel panic at first boot. That's where my time on this "side project" ran out, and I had to go do other things.

I remembered yesterday that I had another Unix machine somewhere in the server park that might have a more recent version. Maybe I'll try to image that one into a virtual session, and see what happens.

I'll keep this thread updated if I ever find a solution.

... 2 years, and a company move later:

I've managed to get SCO 5.0.4 running in a VMWare workstation. The trick was to use an IDE disk, and not Buslogic... I wanted Buslogic in case I ever wanted to import it into ESX, but a workstation will suffice in my case.

I booted the system with the 5.0.7 install floppy (downloadable from SCO), I mounted the 5.0.4 CDROM and installed it without any problem. The only issue I had was the network card (autodetected during installation) not being present in the kernel. Had to relink it afterwards.

Thanks all, for thinking along with me. Smilie

So you had to reinstall SCO from scratch to make it work in your VM. Do you know of any way to take an existing SCO install and just transfer it to VM without reinstalling?
Thank You

Yes, I did reinstall, and I'm going to restore a backup selectively. When it works, and my users are OK with it, I can risk more on that aging physical machine Smilie. I'll then try adjusting the kernel there, to include more host controllers, and try again imaging directly into a VM. To be continued..

SCO Media

Any ideas were i can get a copy of SCO 5.0.7? I want to do what you have done and run it on VMWARE. Been looking but cannot find anything?

Thanks

SCO 5.0.7 is not a free OS, SCO still displays it on their site:
The SCO Group, Inc. | Products | Openserver507 | SCO OpenServer 5.0.7

.. and prices might be along these lines (those are from a year ago):
SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.7 from UniXpress

I don't know if they're still selling it, nor if it's a good idea to buy it.

If you're thinking of running it illegally I would advise caution, as lawsuits seem to have become SCO's core business as of late.. Smilie
