UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi iam tryiing to do two things

1) in a directory i have files like t71,t81,t91....these files have a one line

i want to display the name of the files and contents of the file in one file

i have written the script

for i in *
do
echo $i >> upd.txt
cat $i >> upd.txt
done

output comes in upd.txt
t71
Y
t81
N

but i want the output as t71 Y
t81 N

can u please help me

2) another doubt is i have a script with echo statement..i want to suppress all ouptput from coming to screen...how do i do that

but can u tell me what exactly this means

/dev/null 2>&1 ---

> /dev/null 2>&1

redirect stdout AND stderr to /dev/null. '/dev/null' is UNIX's 'waste basket'.

if i say 2>/dev/null --does it also mean the same..
and does & by any chance indicae bground process..
