how to use GREP comaand to search strings in This OR That scenrio
Hi ,

Can anyone suggest how to use the Grep command to find multiple strings like kind of situation find 'black' or 'white' in file colors.txt

I tried : $ grep "black\|white" colors.txt

but no results.

use egrep
U can use this :-

egrep "black|white" colors.txt
# 3

You can use XPG4 compliant version of grep :
/usr/xpg4/bin/grep -E 'black|white' color.txt
# 4

Or use (n)awk

nawk '$0 ~ /(black|white)/' color.txt

FWIW -

Code:
grep -e 'black' -e 'white'  <filespec>

If you have a large number of patterns put them in a file and use
Code:
grep -f <patternfile> <filespec>
