UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi All,

I am getting the above error when I execute the following in a shell script called by Cron.

Code:

tar -cvf ${WORKING_BACKUP_ROOT}/${TAR_ARCHIVE_FILE} . >/${BACKUP_ROOT}/${ARCHIVE_LOG}
        if [ $? != 0 ]
        then
                echo "`date` : ERROR occurred on creating tar file"
                exit 1
        fi

First, I thought that this error was not fatal and therefore the exit status from the tar should not be > 0.

The file I am tarring are constantly changing but I do need to capture the latest state for backup purposes. It is possible to disregard this warning and thus allow the tar command to proceed.

As a further point the tar file that is being created above is 8.2 GB are there any size limitation on the size of a tar file.

The OS system I am using is Debian

I would have liked to see the complete script called by cron... (Are all the variables set correctly...)
About OS limitations, it depends how/what is installed... e.g. filesystems may have 2GB file size limitations...
