How to assign echo in variable
I've testing the following code:
PHP Code:
echo test.txt | cut -d . -f1 
and get the output "text"

So why can't i assign the command to a variable?
PHP Code:
VAR='"echo test.txt | cut -d . -f1"'
echo $VAR 
# 2

Because your quotes are in the wrong place. Try this:


Code:
  var="`echo test.txt | cut -d . -f1`"

Or the preferred way (no backticks)
Code:
var=$(echo test.txt |cut -d . -f 1)

VAR=$(echo test.txt | cut -d . -f1)
echo $VAR

and get the output "text"
# 5

If you can use $(...) you can use and other POSIX feature:

VAR=test.txt
echo ${VAR%.txt}

# 6

Good point, but probably better off using ${VAR%%.*}since the OP was wanting to cut field 1. The example was test.txt, but the input string might be foo.bar.txt.

why i can't use this command: echo $arg | cut -c 1,2 | read remainArg or echo $arg | cut -c 1,2 | read $remainArg so that the result will be assign to remainArg. Anyway to do this? :) (1 Reply)
