RSH - Remote Shell

Dear All,

I was wondering if there was any way that I could make RSH be non-blocking? i.e. make a remote connection to another machine and execute a function while being able to resume your program.

Thanks for your response. I have scoured the Man pages but my problem is not connecting with a remote host, but with trying to get a non-blocking connection. I want to be able to off load some processing to a server while continuing with my own processing and received word once the server is done. I have thought of setting the output to /dev/null, but then I will never know when the servers task is finished (which is important to my project)

Any thoughts

Try using the 'trap' command to trap the SIGUSR1 signal. You can run your rsh command in the background by ending the line with &, and use a subshell to send SIGUSR1 back to the parent shell to signal that rsh is finished. Something like this:

Code:
trap "finishing commands ..." SIGUSR1
(rsh user@host "commands ..." ; kill -SIGUSR1 $$) &

Thank you so much for your response, I have never heard of Trap before, but after reading the man pages it solved my problem.
