UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I am trying to set up an partition to an existing unix partition. I need to add a partition with XP. Is there a way I can do this without having to start all over? The software I have on my unix box is a very long and tiresome process. Maybe ghost that image somehow?

Without telling us what kind of unix you use, the best advice I can offer is that you should get a separate hard drive for XP. Depending on the type of filesystem on your unix partition, you might be able to resize it, then add a new partition in the empty space for XP Setup to format.

I know it is running with Solaris 8. Is there anything else that I can check to help us out. In which Dir. can I find this info?

If you chose to partition your filesystems / /usr /var /opt into separate filesystems, then it'll be easy for you to get rid of one and mount it on another, thus allowing you to install another OS on the recently relocated partition. If you chose the swap + 1 big /, then I can't help you. I don't know how to resize a partition that's currently being used. (which is not to say one couldn't do it).

Also bear in mind that XP/Windows always assumes it's the only partition on the hdd, so if you install XP it will overwrite your current MBR, so you'll have to be prepared to configure Solaris to boot using Windows's bootloader, or you could possibly use gag --the easiest and most flexible bootloader I've ever worked with....o yeah and free ---and available in a CD ISO.

Personally if I must dual boot, I always prefer to install XP first, then the other OS. It just makes life easier. Either that, or what the other poster suggested: another hard drive.
