cd to the directory given by "which"

Hi:

Is there a simple way to cd to the directory given by a "which" command, without cut&paste, in csh?

thinking something like:
Code:
 cd 'echo `which file.pl`; !:h'

But could not make it to work? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

N.B Phil

Use following code

Code:
cd `which file.pl|cut -d "file.pl" -f1`

Thanks for the response.

But when I try it, it says:

"cut: the delimiter must be a single character"

Thanks.

If this wasn't csh (which I have never found reason to use).

Code:
var1="`which file.pl`"
var2=`dirname "${var1}"`
cd "${var2}"

Hi:

is it possible to make somethin like this to work in csh?

cd ( dirname `which cmd` )

The csh keeps complaining one thing or the other.

Thanks.

csh version of my earlier post.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/csh
set var1="`which file.pl`"
set var2=`dirname "${var1}"`
cd "${var2}"
pwd

Hi Methyl:

Thanks for your responses! It certainly works.

But I am just curious, how to make something like this to work:

cd ( dirname `which cmd` )

Why does csh complains about "badly placed ()"?

It seems so simple and straightforward, yet none of its variations works so far.

is it possible to nest backticks?

Thanks.
