Moving files between directories using SFTP
I want to connect to an SFTP server, GET some files, then move those files to a different directory on the SFTP server so I don't try to GET them next time. But there doesn't seem to be a way to move files between directories on the remote server from SFTP. I missing something obvious? And if not, has anyone found a workaround?

'man sftp' yields:
Code:
     rename oldpath newpath
           Renames remote file from oldpath to newpath.

If you were wanting to script it you can also use ssh to issue remote commands.

Code:
ssh username@servername "mv /old/dir/path /new/dir/path"

Thanks for replying, vgersh99.

When I tried that (on solaris) it didn't seem to want to let me move files between directories, only rename files in the same directory. But I may have just messed up... I'll try it again when I'm back in work.

Thanks silentbizob - I'll investigate ssh as an alternative (I only found out that ssh existed today!)

Yeah, it's pretty handy. I had to do a lot of file manipulation on a remote server and using ssh for remote commands did the trick. Only issue you might run into is if you are trying to use local variables, the way you work around that is echoing the ssh command, the echo resolves the variable before the command is processed. See the example

Presumably you are collecting data from one machine to process on another, and then wanting to delete the files on the remote machine to prevent their being processed the next time.
We have done this using a script like the following:

if [ ! -r ftp.input.data ]
then
   echo "ascii" > ftp.input.data
fi
echo "mget * >>ftp.input.data
cd newfiles
ftp ftp.com <ftp.input.data
cd ..
echo "ascii" >ftp.input.data
list=`ls newfiles`
for file in $list
do
process_file
mv newfiles/$file done
echo  del $file >>ftp.input.data
done

The syntax for sftp is slightly different, but you should get the idea
