Help with grep
I'm not the greatest with Linux so I'm hoping someone could offer there assistance. I currently have several thousand files in a directory and I have a txt file that contains several hundred computer names. I need to search each file in the directory for the computer names located in the computername file.

So I know how to do
grep mywordgoes here * and this will search every file in the directory. But what i want to do is type something along the lines of...
grep computernamefile.txt * > output.txt
I understand that this is not correct, how could I have the contents of my computernamefile.txt automatically searched for, that way I don't have to type each computername into the grep command??
Any help or guidance is appreciated.

I'm not one of the experts, but I think this will work for you:

grep -f 'computernamefile.txt' * >> output.txt

tip: make sure there are no blank lines in your input file.

Yes, you can confidently use that option.

-f is the thing which you are searching for.
