So, after connecting you want to execute ls, and then still have a complete shell available? Or do you want to just run ls and keep the window open until the user acknowledges?

Option 1: Create and make executable a script on the server containing
Code:
#!/bin/sh
ls
/bin/bash -l

and then call 'ssh root@127.0.0.1 "./script.sh"

Option 2: Since you only want an ls added to the normal login process, add it to the bottom of .bashrc / .login / .profile / whatever your shell uses. Much, much, much easier.
