sed question

Hi Guys -

If I have the string:

Code:
alter application LOADAPP add variable TESTVAR "Test","Test1";

I need to be able to add single quotes around that entire quoted strings.

So it should look like:

Code:
alter application LOADAPP add variable TESTVAR '"Test","Test1"';

Been trying with SED and can't get it.

If I can incorporate it into my main piece of code it would be better:

Code:
awk '{for (I=1;I<=NF;I++) if ($I == "MS_IND") {print "alter application LOADAPP add variable "$(I+1)" "$(I+2)";"};}' test.txt >> new_file.txt

I'm trying to put single quotes around $(I+2) but can't seem to get it.

Thanks!

Hello SIMMS7400,

Could you please try following and let me know if this helps you.
Code:
awk -vs1="'" '{match($0,/".*"/);sub(substr($0,RSTART,RLENGTH),s1 substr($0,RSTART,RLENGTH) s1);print}'   Input_file

Thanks,
R. Singh

Thank you very much! It works for that specified line. However, it's inserting (2) ' quotes infront of the other lines. Please see below:

Code:
''alter application MS_INDR add variable ScenarioCurrent Fcst;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstYear1 FY17;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstYear2 FY18;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstYear3 FY19;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstYear4 FY20;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstYear5 FY21;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable FcstMonth Jan;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable ScenarioPrior Fcst_Q1;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable ActualMonth Jan;
''alter application MS_INDR add variable ActualYear FY17;
alter application MS_INDR add variable TESTVAR '"Test","Test1"';

How can we correct that?

Code:
awk '{ for (I=1;I<NF;I++) if ($I == "TESTVAR") { sub(/".*"/, "'\''&'\''", $(I+1)) } print }' test.txt

The '\'' trick is the key to get a literal ' within a 'string in ticks'. An example shows how it works
Code:
echo 'a literal '\'' within ticks'

A variable looks nicer
Code:
awk -v tick="'" '{ for (I=1;I<NF;I++) if ($I == "TESTVAR") { sub(/".*"/, tick "&" tick, $(I+1)) } print }' test.txt

Or, as a compromise, do the trick once in the BEGIN section
Code:
awk 'BEGIN { tick="'\''" } { for (I=1;I<NF;I++) if ($I == "TESTVAR") { sub(/".*"/, tick "&" tick, $(I+1)) } print }' test.txt

Try:
Code:
awk -v q=\' '{sub(/".*"/, q "&" q)}1' test.txt

--
Sed version:
Code:
sed "s|\".*\"|'&'|" test.txt

--
Incorporated in original script:
Code:
awk -v q=\' '{for (I=1;I<=NF;I++) if ($I == "MS_IND") print "alter application LOADAPP add variable " q $(I+1) " " $(I+2) q ";"}' test.txt >> new_file.txt

This can be done with

Code:
sed "s/\".*\"/'&'/" file

But I'm guessing the input data you've shown isn't really representative of your actual requirements Smilie
