I think sed and vi both do maximum enclosure in substitute so that code would get the first through the last double quote in one gulp. This should have a better shot:
Code:
sed "s/\"[^\"]*\"/'&'/g"

This looks for any number of not double-quote characters to find the next double-quote. The g would take care of any other double quoted text on the line.

@wbport: Yes, but this has not been requested; look at the sample input data in post#1:
"Test","Test1" to be altered to '"Test","Test1"'

Code:

Thank you! HOwever, it didn't give me the expected results:

I needed to move the first q to the following spot, then it worked perfectly!!

Code:
awk -v q=\' '{for (I=1;I<=NF;I++) if ($I == "MS_IND") print "alter application LOADAPP add variable "$(I+1) " " q $(I+2) q ";"}' MaxL_Export.txt >> new_file.txt

Hi Guys -

I was wondering how come I can't use any variables in the awk statement?

Instead of MS_IND and LOADAPP I want to use variable. For some reason, it's not working.

Thanks!

I got half of it. Now how come my loadapp variable wont display inside the print command?

Code:
awk -v q=\' -v essb_app=$essb_app -v loadapp=$essb_load_app '{for (I=1;I<=NF;I++) if ($I == essb_app) print "alter application loadapp add variable "$(I+1) " " q $(I+2) q ";"}' $securitypath/MaxL_Export.txt >> "$ms_scripts/"$essb_load_app"_VARIABLE_CREATE.mxl"

One might guess that you're hoping that a shell variable expansion will be performed inside a single quoted string, which the shell does not do. But, without seeing the code you are using, we are just making wild guesses... Why don't you show us the code you're using and explain what you hope it will do?

Hi Don -

Thanks for the note!

here is my latest piece of code:

Code:
essb_load_app=MS_INDR
essb_app=MS_IND

awk -v q=\' -v essb_app=$essb_app -v loadapp=$essb_load_app '{for (I=1;I<=NF;I++) if ($I == essb_app) print "alter application loadapp add variable "$(I+1) " " q $(I+2) q ";"}' $securitypath/MaxL_Export.txt >> "$ms_scripts/"$essb_load_app"_VARIABLE_CREATE.mxl"

I need loadapp to display the correct value which is MS_INDR. It's just displaying itself. Thanks!

I figured it out, I just needed to move around the double quotes. it was an oversight on my part.

Thank you!
