Variable in sed command
Hi All,
How can i use a variable in a sed command ? I cant seem to get it to work as at present its just printing $i at the start of every line rather than the variable $1.

Code:
sed -e "s/^/\$i,|/"


Any help would be appreciated.

Hello mutley2202,

Could you please try following and let me know if this helps you. Let's say following is Input_file.
Code:
cat Input_file
12
123    FP
11
10    RFP

Then i is a variable whose value is i=5.
Following is the code the to put i's value into sed.
Code:
sed 's/^12/'"$i"'/'  Input_file

Output will be as follows.
Code:
5
53    FP
11
10    RFP

NOTE: This is just an example, you could replicate similarly into your requirements then.

Variables in command arguments should be in "quotes". The suggestion was a concatenation 'string'"var"'string'
Code:
sed 's/^/'"$i"',|/'

In simple cases you can have
Code:
sed "s/^/$i,|/"
