Not sure about AIX, but normally, parameter lengths are limited by memory and sometimes by stack size, and so you should check "ulimit -a". Try increasing the stack size??

Do you think the awk that is failing is the "colorizing symbols" or "colorizing lines" instance?

You do know that you can tell awk to use a script file instead of the command line, right? "awk -f script.awk input_file" might help you out here.
