Hi,

I executed

Code:

ls -d */

It shows only directories with / suffixed ( why / is coming here )

If I say

Code:

ls -d

then it gives .
if I say

Code:

ls -d abc

then it gives abc with out showing content of directory abc

My doubt here is what does that */ represents

ls -d */

it will list all the directories (ends with /) in the current directory.

*/ represents directory.

$ ls -d */
bin/ conf/

Execute ls -l */ you will understand better.
ls -l */ will list out all the files in all the directories in long format.

$ls -l */
bin/:
total 220
-rwxr-xr-x 1 admin cc 218833 May 26 17:26 lo100cfg

conf/:
total 36
-rw-r--r-- 1 admin cc 2283 Jun 29 20:17 Administrator_reset_pw.xml
-rw-r--r-- 1 admin cc 2121 May 26 17:25 License.xml

so here "ls -l */" is equal to "ls -l bin conf"

to know about the directory(not the content of the directory ,we use "-d" option with "ls" comand.
but using ls with directory without the -d option which will give the content of the directory(what are the files or directory present inside the given directory).

when we use only ls which take the current directory as default argument so we see the files or directory existed in it( without getting its own information).

Hope it may clear your doubt.

see the following ls command options:

here "a" is a file "abc" is a directory.

$ls a abc
a

abc:

ls -a

it will prints all the files in the current directory including hidden files.
hidden files and directory's name's are starting with dot(.)

a
abc
.a

ls -Q a abc

-Q option is used to add double quotes to the files and directory's

"a"

"abc":


ls -F a abc visualization.jar
a visualization.jar*

abc:


-F, --classify
append indicator (one of */=>@|) to entries

ls -d
list directory entries instead of contents, and do not dereference symbolic links
