the largest supported disks in a 280r are 72gb... the 146gb disk might work but you should have latest obp and patches... and yes, let's see the output at obp level.

OBP is 4.5
OBP is 4.5 and I did the probe-scsi-all and I see two Segate disks show up so obviously the system is seeing the disk. I just executed devfsadm and I have the same symptoms when I do a format: drive not available.

Do I have to label the disk or set up the initial file system with newfs? For some reason I cannot copy a VTOC to the disk.

largest is 72g
If the largest support disk is 72G, then I think there is something going on because I build the system on the root disk and the disk shows something like 133g or maybe 134g. This system used to be the host for a trusted solaris so maybe it has the most recent obp version but it has been like 1 year or a bit more since the server has been maintained and updated.

Did you check the part-number of the HDD against the system hardware architecture for compatibility using sunsolve?
