install new disk

I am attempting to install a new internal disk. System is running Solaris 9/05.
I did a touch /reconfigure and see the disk when I type format command. But the cxtxdx disk shows "drive not available".

Any idea if we are supposed to configure anything with this disk? I have not format the disk but did on a previous disk thinking disk was bad but the same thing is happening to this disk. Am I supposed to format the disk and label it etc?

This is a Segate disk and I think came out of a Sun box.

Thanks.

cfgadm will help you. cfgadm -al, chk the disk out there. do a cfgadm -c configure Cxtydz

have you tried the cfgadm?

earlysame55,

Have you tried the cfgadm command? I tried the last suggestion you made, cfgadm -c configure cxtxdx and apparently the syntax is wrong as spits out the other options I need to add. When I did the cfgadm with the disk option, both disk did not come up and I know I have one operational disk running.

Anyone have any suggestion on how to configre a disk. Is my disk bad...find it strange that I got two bad disks! Smilie

what hardware is it and what disk? after the "touch /reconfigure" did you reboot the mashine? have you run "devfsadm"?

What hardware?

Hi Duke,

This is a SunFire 280R box and the disk is a Segate disk...and I believe it came from another Sun box but cannot be too sure. Someone has given me this. The thing is this is the same scenario as the other disk I had last week so wondering if I am not doing something right.

No, I have nto run devfsadm command on this disk, but I did on the other disk and it did not help at all.

Thanks for the help though.

have you rebooted the mashine? what kind of disk? seagate is the vendor... but what size is the disk? what is the OBP version of the 280? is it possible to get ssh to the mashine to have a look... you can use the sun-shared-shell to monitor the remote access. it can be downloaded at the sun website (sunsolve.sun.com).
also can you see the disk at ok> prompt with "probe-scsi-all"?

reboot? yes

Yes, I've rebooted the box after doing the touch /reconfigure. I believe the disk is either a 133G or 146G...hard to find the information on the face of the disk. I will have to check out what the OBP version is, but there root disk is working just find and appears to be the same disk. I will bring system down to ok prompt and probe-scsi-all and see if the disk shows up.

This box is not on the network at this moment. I have direct access to the server.
