can't shut down ultra-10

Running Solaris 8, Sun Ultra-10 system

during process of checking a crashed hard drive from another system, which I have attached to a good system as a slave 2nd drive....

I ended up with the system in a state where I can not shut it down from the command line. If I try the init 5 or shutdown commands I get a response:

shutdown: cannot execute

I'm trying to avoid just power cycling the Ultra-10.

Any advice ?

Don't turn it off until you know why 'shutdown' is no longer executable.
Maybe the path has changed, or you may be confused as to what your pwd actually is.
If you have inadvertently corrupted something on the root file system of the primary drive, you may not be able to reboot the system if you do turn it off.

Can you run *anything*?

Is this bad 2nd drive dismounted?

I hope the SCSI id's don't conflict, or you have the IDE master/slave relationships correct.

Does 'sync' work?

You could try "sync" from the operating system then quickly break into the prom monitor then turn off from there.

Force it down...

You can use the following command to bring your system down to a halt:

/usr/sbin/uadmin 2 0

You may want to do some further troubleshooting before you do this however, such as getting the messages from your system, try the following command:

/usr/sbin/dmesg

Good luck with your repairs!

Thanks for the help..

I ended up power cycling - luckily no damage was done, was able to reboot.

I will file your suggestions though, for the next time I encounter this problem

Thank You !
