And in what aspect you are saying that it won't be a broken sendmail , so that i can help you better.

sudo apt-get install sendmail

service start sendmail or alternatively start service sendmail (You might want to configure it first tho, sendmail can fsck you up!)

, I might be wrong, but I say its not sendmail, because could not happen to two identical systems configured at the same time
