Operating Systems Solaris new to solaris

I would learn on a Solaris VM to begin with. Don't play with Solaris 11 to much. Solaris works best on sparc. But you can learn about solaris stuff on a x86.
The important thing for an interview is to be truthful and show a willingness to learn. I have gotten a job over more experienced people because they like my personality better then the other guys.

Bitlord - why would you say to not spend too much time on Solaris 11 ?

I'm just curious.

I installed it a few weeks ago and am really impressed with it.

I'm naive professionally, so I'm assuming that the poster was not being sarcastic.

The advice about getting a used Sparc box is worthwhile. As best as I can tell, even after Oracle has gobbled up Sun Microsystems you can still download and burn Solaris (or buy DVD's) and run it legally. You can't get much in the way of patches and updates, though.

As far as preparing for a job interview, you're not gonna be a good candidate for a job requiring heavy Solaris experience, no matter what you do. If the position is not too advanced, then emphasize your coursework. Talk about some learning experience, some issue you solved, in your schooling. Stress the similarities between Solaris and the Unixes (Unices?) with which you are more familiar (I hope there are some).

From 1996: SUMMARY: paging vs. swapping

"Paging refers to paging out individual
pages of memory. Swapping is when an entire process is swapped out.
Paging is normal. Swapping happens when the resource load is heavy
and the entire proces is written out to disk. If you're swapping
a lot, you might want to look deeper into looking at things like
adding memory."

You raise an interesting question, it never occured to me to wonder if these terms had different meanings in different OS's. God, I hope not! (It'd be as bad as having the slashes going the wrong way in windows...)
