Looking for help with Solaris bootable CD

Hi Folks,

I persued my cousin to purchase couple Sun boxes to learn Unix. He is downloading the media but the CD he burns with the downloaded ISO does not remain bootable Smilie
He is lives in Aldershot, Hampshire and pick up bootable Solaris CDs from nearby cities...

Any help?

What hardware ?
What ISOs ?

I would make sure he is getting the correct CDs/DVDs for the proper architecture (SPARC vs. x86) and is downloading off of the official web site. The latest is Solaris 10 u10.

Maybe he's not burning the image properly. CD Burner XP is a very good Windows burning software if he needs a free one.

If he isn't familiar with Unix it could very well be user error, such as not understanding how to boot a CD from PROM.

He could also install Solaris into a VM using something such as Virtual Box, and practice with the x86 install of Solaris there. There is very little difference between the x86 and SPARC versions once the OS has started booting. The main difference is just x86's BIOS & Grub vs. SPARC's PROM.

also note that Solaris 10 and 11 don't work on 32bit sparc.
