I concur with the output of this solution.

My circumstances.
Solaris 9 system
2 main interfaces with tons of virtual interfaces

for some undetermined reason some of my virtual interfaces go away. I don't want to go through all of these interfaces checking one by one to see which one is up and which ones are down. This server is being prepared for use so its not being used at the moment.

While on the console I ran the
/etc/init.d/network command as is.

While this did UP all of my interfaces it produced some bad side affects. (mainly I presume because of the shcat/cat issue)

When I ran /etc/init.d/network all of my interfaces came up, but I lost my hostname.

When I ran "hostname" on my system it produced "unknown" and thus when I tried to SSH to this system I could get
"Server not found in Kerberos database"

I then came upon this post about changing shcat to cat, redirecting it to another file, setting permissions and running. This time the outcome was much better. All of my interfaces are up and I can also SSH in.
