Using find
I am not that savy with command usage as it relates to pipes and scripts yet.

I wanted help on stringing a command together that found all types of a particular file and then zipped them up.

Can anyone provide a basic framework command. These files would obviosly be located throughout the directory tree so I would have to run it from root directory.

zip myfiles $(find / -name 'somefile.*' -type f )

This assumes by type you mean .txt .lis, etc. and you do not want directories

Now I understand everything accept why the $(). Why does this workin instead of piping to the find command?

for instance

whcih $SHELL

$ is variable , and it is used in shell scripting just like in C , first we must declare function with integer, char , double etc.. , I think same thing must worth for shell scripting

for example

echo $HOME

would produce the same output like command pwd when my current position is my home direcotory

This syntax is the modern and better way that replaces the obsolete backquoted one:

Piping will work too and is actually slightly more robust:

find / -name 'somefile.*' -type f | zip myfiles -@
