Install boot required in SVM ??

I have setup mirroring for root disk.

As per Sun SVM process, there is no need to installbootblk
BigAdmin Submitted Tech Tip: Boot Disk Mirroring Using Solaris Volume Manager Software

But technically speaking, if we want to boot from 2nd disk which is mirrored, we have to install the bootblk on the 2nd HDD.

But my question is that whether Syncing process copy the bootbkl from 1st HDD ==> 2nd HDD ???

Vicky

No. You need to install the bootblock on the mirror once otherwise your data will be safe but your system won't be bootable if the primary disk crashes.

But as per SUN, they have not mentioned to installboot block.

Is it required in Solaris 10??

Sun mirroring steps http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/..._mirroring.jsp

15) Determine the device path to the boot devices for both the primary and mirror:

ls -l /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Dec 23 17:51 /dev/dsk/devices/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/sd@0,0:a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Dec 23 17:51 /dev/dsk/devices/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/sd@1,0:a

# eeprom "nvramrc=devalias rootdisk /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk@1,0
devalias rootmirror /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk@0,0"

(Please note the change "sd" to "disk" in using ls -l output.)

# eeprom "use-nvramrc?=true"

You can also change the boot-device values so that the system tries to boot from the mirror in case one of them is not available.

# eeprom boot-device="rootdisk rootmirror net"

16) Once the syncing is complete, test your system by removing the root disk.

It is definitely mentioned in Sun documentation. What you use as a reference is a contributed document. Look closer at its fine print header:

Of course, how would you expect the system to boot without a boot loader installed ?
Note that the command is installgrub vs installboot with x86 hardware.

Ohh K......

Its a SPARC machine, with solaris 10.

Also in x86 the command the different like
/sbin/installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0

So according to you, installboot is required on the mirrored disk.

I will test it out on a SPARC machine and let you know.

Thanks for your response, i highly appreciate it.

Vicky

No need to install boot block on the mirrored HDD, i have tested the same on solaris 10, V240 SPARC machine.

add mirrored disk in boot-device variable.

like ...

bash-3.00# eeprom | grep boot-device
boot-device=disk disk1 net

Okay, interesting. So after all, the bootblk might to be part of the slice containing the filesystem and not to the label as I originally thought. In the former case, it is duplicated when mirroring is set up.
