What is the significance of the /etc/syslog.conf configuration?

I just want to see how your system logs are being logged and piped into which files.. nothing to do with time stamp

Unless you emptied /var/adm/messages prior to creating the flar image you will restore the messages file every time you jumpstart. That is almost certainly what happened.

From your last post, I understand that the /var/adm/messages need to be cleaned before taking the flash image for the system. Am i correct?

Could you please throw more light on this?

I don't see any darkness left. Not sure where to shine a light. Empty /var/adm/messages if you want to. I don't, I just ignore the old messages. But there are lots more log files that might contain old entries.

If so, how to remove such old contents. My doubt is, if we do a fresh installation, wont the older files get deleted?

please comfirm that do we need to clean such error logs prior to taking flash images, if we dont want the older messages to be there in the logs. kindly help me clarify these doubts.

The /var/adm/messages in Solaris seem to log more system messages/errors compared to /var/log/messages in Linux. I checked the log level in Linux and they seem OK. Is there any other log file that contains the messages or is it just that Linux doesn't log great many things? (2 Replies)
