I have this following statement:

awk -F "," '/'"$meas"'/ {print$0}' defn.csv > temp.csv

$meas variable has been taken care of to fetch a variable from user.

My defn.csv file containes these entries (along with a lot of other entries)

PDD,208802088,4924407000
OPDD,208802088,4924407000
IPDD,208802088,4616448000

What my intent was, to find only for "PDD" in defn.csv and print the corresponding line in temp.csv.

But it prints all the three lines to temp.csv, because PDD is contained in PDD,OPDD,IPDD.

But i want to match whole word only and print PDD,208802088,4924407000 to temp.csv.

Or in other words, i want to match the $meas with First comma separated value (which i hope will match whole word only), and print corresponding line to temp.csv.

Please help.

The { print } part is redundant as that is the default action for awk.

No, era's code is correct, the shell has to expand your variable, so the variable shouldn't place within single quotes.
