hi all
i have a directory with a file in the same length
ls -1
20070131-00800-000012345885858-00.rtp
20070131-00800-000012355885858-00.rtp
20070131-00800-000085765141414-00.rtp
i want to display all the ls -1 into file but without the suffix .rtf
ls -1 > a.log
how shell i do it ?

use this:

ls -1 | awk -F. '{print $1}' > a.log

change ".ed" to your need thats all(I hope)

ls -1 | sed 's/.ed//'

The awk command breaks down its input into variables, ($1, $2, $3, etc.). If you use it without the -F flag it breaks down the input based on spaces, or white space. The -F flag specifies what to use as a separator instead of white space. The above command says to take the output of the ls -1 command and separate it based on the period (.) character, then print everything prior to the first separator ('{print $1}') into the a.log file.

Study up on the sed and awk commands. They will help you out immensely in shell scripting. There's a great book published by O'Reilly on the two commands and their usage. I recommend it to every young admin I meet.
