Hello,

I am trying to look for a pattern as follows in a file

ABC*XYZK

inside of a file

The pattern is in a variable called Grp_pat

However when I run the following line inside the script and look for pattern match, the script fails to match the pattern in the file.

Code:

grep $Grp_pat /xxx/temp/xxxx.lst
if [ $? -eq 0 ]
then
      echo "pattern found"
else
      echo "pattern not found"
fi

where xxx.lst has the ABC*ZYXK line in it.
Can someone please advise how this can be overcome.

Try putting double quotes around it as:

grep "$Grp_pat" /xxx/temp/xxxx.lst
...

Use fgrep/grep -F.

use this:

/usr/xpg4/bin/grep -F $Grp_pat /xxx/temp/xxxx.lst

Thanks to everyone who suggested the -F option.
This works like a charm.
When I try the following option

grep "ABC\*XYZK" /xxx/temp/xxxx.lst

seems to return the pattern that I am searching for.
However when I used the same within the context of the script I got a different result.

I have resorted to the -F option to make it work for my scenario.
