Using grep

I have to extract those lines from the ps command that match a particular pid. So i use a grep in my script like this

Code:

$pid=1234
ps | grep "$pid"

This also matches lines with pid 12345.. So How do I search for only what I need?

You can use -p with ps to specify a pid...

ps -p$pid

If your flavor of grep doesn't support "-x" for exact match, see if you have "fgrep" available on your system. If yes, then you use

ps | fgrep -x "$pid"

The -x option (for fgrep or grep) matches the entire line, so that cannot work when the pattern is just the PID.

Some versions of grep have a -w option, that only matches an entire word. For those that don't, you can use:
Code:
ps | grep "\<$pid\>"

All of which is unnecessary in this case, as ps can take the PID of a process as an argument, and it will print the desired information.

Most modern version also allow user-specified formatting of the output with the -o option.
