awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: bailing out near line 1


it seems awk doesn't accept ' ' inside?

try nawk instead of awk

how to use awk to have output file

I found command by myself
nawk ' { if(length($2) == "2") { print $1, substr($3,1,1) } else { print $1, substr($2,3,2) } }' input > output

Is there better way?

Same awk gives different output:
