'sed' help

hi folks,

been looking for hours to find a way to replace the following in a text file using sed in RHEL. Can anyone help?

Code:
from:
User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4

to:
User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4,xxxx5

Thanks all for help rendered!

What have you tried?

What other text in the file you're editing has lines that might be similar to the lines you want to change (but that you don't want to be matched)?

I have tried the one without space and comma, and it worked. But I cannot figure out this one.

I can confirm there is only one line that matches the item that I'd like to change to.

There are millions of sed commands without space and comma and none of them would seem to match a line starting with the string User_Alias and containing exactly three commas (which seems to be what you are trying to match.

Please show us what you have tried so we get a better idea of what you are trying to do and make an educated guess as to where you might be stuck.

A better description of what you are trying to match (instead of a single sample with no indication of what the important text is that you're trying to match) would also help.

With what you have shown us so far, the simple command:
Code:
sed 's/$/,xxxx5/' filename

would do everything that you have requested.

Hello jaapar,

Following awk may also help you on same.
Code:
echo "User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4" | awk '{print $0",xxxx5"}'

Thanks,
R. singh

Hi, If you are trying to increase the counter on every line with the occurrence of SYSTEM_ADMIN then below script will help you out -

Code:
mannu]$ cat testmannufor1.sh
#! /bin/bash

rm -rf testfile.tmp

while read -r line
do
var0=`echo $line | grep SYSTEM_ADMIN`
if [ ! -z "$var0" ]
then
var=`echo $var0 | sed 's/.*\(.\)/\1/'`
var1=`echo $var0 | awk -F ',' '{print $2}' | sed '$ s/.$//'`
var2=`expr $var + 1`
echo $line | sed 's/'"$var"'/'"$var","$var1""$var2"'/g'  >>  testfile.tmp
else
echo $line >>  testfile.tmp
fi
done < testfile.123

Example file:-

Code:
mannu]$ cat testfile.123
User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4
User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4
bndndnmsndsnd,snd
User_Alias  SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3

Script output:-

Code:
mannu]$ cat testfile.tmp
User_Alias SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4,xxxx5
User_Alias SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4,xxxx5
bndndnmsndsnd,snd
User_Alias SYSTEM_ADMIN=xxxx1,xxxx2,xxxx3,xxxx4
