If it doesnt need to be interactive, the following works in KSH, (havent tried bash):

Code:
#!/bin/ksh

typeset -Z4 fnum=1

LN=1

for file in `ls DSC_*`

do
newfile=`echo $file | awk -F[0-9] 'NR='$LN' {print $1 "'$fnum'"".jpeg";exit;}'`
mv $file $newfile

fnum=`expr $fnum + 1`
LN=`expr $LN + 1`
done
