And, if someone is using a shell that doesn't accept $(<file), and file1.txt just contains one line, you could use:
Code:
IFS= read -r A < file1.txt; awk -v A="$A" '{print A,$0}' file.txt

or, entirely in awk:
Code:
awk 'FNR == NR {p = $0; next} {print p, $0 }' file1.txt file.txt

And, as always, if someone wants to try any of these awk scripts on a Solaris/SunOS system, change awk to /usr/xpg4/bin/awk.

Excellent. Thanks. Final question then: If I do all of this in a bash script and want to replace file1.txt with a command, for example:
Code:
date "+%y%m%d  %T"

which right now gives the following output (today's date and the current time):
Code:
150513 20:14:32

How to do that? So my input here would be file.txt described in #6 and the command that outputs the date and the time and the output would look like this:
Code:
150513 20:14:32 123 456 789
150513 20:14:32 321 654 987
150513 20:14:32 222 444 555

Thanks again for all great help. ;-)

Hopefully, you'll see how easy all of these pieces fit together soon...
Code:
awk -v A="$(date "+%y%m%d  %T")"  '{print A,$0}' file.txt
