Command to get the pathname in variable
Hi,

I want to saperate file path and file name into two variables.

for ex:- lets say file is /home/prasoon/File.txt

i want FILE_PATH=/home/prasoon

and FILENAME=File.txt

i need your help.

Look at dirname and basename.

As CarloM suggested already you can do like this

Code:
$ full="/home/prasoon/File.txt"

$ dirname $full
/home/prasoon

$ basename $full
File.txt

Or else if you need parameter substitution you can do like this

$ full="/home/prasoon/File.txt"

$ file=${full##*/}

$ dirpath=${full:0:${#full}-${#file}}

$ echo $file  $dirpath

File.txt /home/prasoon/
