Hi

I have one doubt while calling a shell scripts from another shell script.

suppose i have two shell script abc.sh and xyz.sh
i call many instance of xyz.sh in abc.sh when i look at process id's using ps command i can see process ids for abc.sh command bur not a single process id of xyz.sh.

Is this the expected behavior of shells while invoking one from another.

Both should be individual process ID , please do a test using sleep command inside the script for 30sec, so that you can be get noticed in ps .
Try something
sleep 30
echo $$

abc.sh

Code:

echo "PID: $0 :: $$"
echo "PS sais (${0##/*}): $(ps | grep $$)"
echo "Calling other: xyz.sh"
sh ./xyz.sh &
PID=$!
echo "Its (from ABC, get xyz value) PID: $PID"
echo "bye from ${0##/*}"

xyz.sh

Code:

sleep 3
echo "My PID: $0 :: $$"
echo "PS sais (${0##/*}): $(ps | grep ${0##/*})"
echo "bye from ${0##/*}"

Then simply call: ./abc.sh
