Need help in find command
i have a directories and in that we have sub-directories.In sub-directoires contains lot of .msg files.what i want is to search a particular string in.msg files for all directories.

could you please help me in this regards.

Try:

find /your/main/directory -name "*.msg" -exec grep "pattern" {} \;

If you have many and large files, this small modification might be more efficient:
Code:
find /your/main/directory -name "*.msg" -exec grep -l "pattern" {} +

It will grep multiple files in one go, and it will stop grepping any single file when a match is found.

One should assure that *.msg is a file:
Code:
find /your/main/directory -type f -name "*.msg" -exec grep ...

There are 4 ways of using grep:
Code:
-exec grep "pattern" {} \;

returns the matching lines.
Code:
-exec grep -l "pattern" {} \;

returns the matching file names.
Code:
-exec grep "pattern" /dev/null {} \;

returns file name and matching line, separated by :
Code:
-exec grep "pattern" {} \; -print

returns matching lines then the file name.

I am using csh and getting the error "find: No match." but I cannot figure out why. What I am trying to do is set the find command to a variable and then execute the variable as a command.
