I'm currently trying to use the expect command in a script to login as root on my Cent box. I have got it working on my Ubuntu box earlier but can not seem to get it working again. I've been on google for hours trying to figure it out.

For Ubuntu it's this

#!/usr/bin/expect
spawn "sudo service cups restart"
expect "lothy:"
send "******\r"

For Cent I'm using this

#!/usr/bin/expect
spawn su - root -c "service cups restart"
expect "Password:"
send "*****\r"

I'm not near my cent box but what I'm getting is this as a result on my Ubuntu box

bash -x ./expt.exp

runs a bash on the expect script - wrong script interpreter!
--
sudo can demand a password or not - a problem with expect.
Perhaps in sudoers you can put a NOPASSWD: before the command? Then you don't need expect (and unsafely storing pw in a script file).

Hi.

My experience has been that one uses either:

#!/usr/bin/expect -f

or
Code:
#!/usr/bin/expect --

Then assuming that the script has execute permission, and is on, say, file, e1, one runs:

./e1

The man page on:

OS, ker|rel, machine: Linux, 3.2.0-4-amd64, x86_64
Distribution        : Debian GNU/Linux 7.1 (wheezy)

or your distribution has more details.

Here is the response from my Cent 6.2 box.

[Lothy@Z1 ~]$ ./expect.tst
spawn su - root service cups restart
Password: missing "
    while executing
"send "password123\n
"
    (file "./expect.tst" line 4)

and the file

#!/usr/bin/expect
spawn su - root service cups restart
expect "Password: "
send "password123\n
~

I was unsure weather or not bash -x would hand over control to /usr/bin/expect when it saw the #!
I also added a -f and -- still the same response

It's acting like it doesn't see the "Password: " prompt but I run the command and it does prompt me. I tried the password without the space after the : as well

Fixed it if anyone needs to see. As soon as I added an interact at the bottom it fixed it.
