Error nohup in cron

Hello Gurus,

I have written two simple shell scripts which i want to run daily via cronjob.
One of the scripts contains "nohup" ,which is not getting executed when i run via cron.

Why does "nohup" is not working via cron?

Both the scripts work well when i run them manually.I have tested them.

Is there any "Setting enviroment" for cron to be set ?

Your help is appreciable.

Thanks & Regards

Try this
Repalce the command with its complete path and run in cronjob like
/usr/bin/nohup.

Error nohup in cron

Hi ashok,

I need nohup because it gives me "nohup.out" which is log file for analysis.
I am facing this problem on two of my production servers.

A Diffrent case:

On one of our prod server, i run a simple script which works out manually well.
But the moment i keep it in cron,it does not produce the same output as it produced while running manually.

This is very irritating bcoz the scripts i run are extremely simple.

Can anyone help in understanding CRON more< i thought i knew it Smilie >

Do i need to call my user's .profile before running these scripts in cron?

Thanks & Regards

Are you using nohup.out as a log file ? I would think that you can achive same result with

program name >log file

Am i miising something ?

Thanks

Or do:

program_name > logfile 2>&1

That gives you everything. You don't need the nohup; that's only if you're running a long job on a terminal.

For the other question, we'd need to see output.

For the last two questions: It is my experience that most cron problems are caused by the script writer forgetting that cron's environment is quite small and tight. PATH is minimal, dot files are not read, etc. You should make a habit of setting PATH and any other environment variables explicitly in any scripts you write that are for use by cron.
