Shell Programming and Scripting

Hello,

I am puzzled, I am learning awk from the book "effective awk programming".

there is this very simple piece of code in the beginning of the book:

Code:

$ awk "BEGIN { print \"Don't Panic!\" }"

The output should be written on the screen as "Don't Panic!"

But it does not work. I know that the problem is the comma of "Don't" as when I change it to "Dont Panic!", it works.

How could I solve this problem?

I can't even paste that character into my terminal, it turns into garbage. You have edited your code in something like Microsoft Word, which turns actual quote characters into weird "smart quote" characters.

If you replace your ' with a real ' it works for me.
