Script to search and replace

Hi All,

I am trying to write a script which will find a particular text in certain group of files under a directory and if found correctly it will replace them with a new text in all the files.
Could any one let me know how do i find the text in many files under a directory.

Thanks

There are lots of ways to do this DO NOT run this on real files until you have tested it
If the files are immediately under a directory
Code:
cd /path/to/directory
for fname in *
do
    sed 's/old text/new text/g' $fname > tmp.tmp
    # uncomment the below line after you have it working
    # mv tmp.tmp $fname
    # this next line shows you what happened put a # in front of it to turn it off
    echo " $fname changed to:" && more tmp.tmp
done

If you have a directory tree - check back and we can help you.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
old_str=xxx
new_str=yyy

for fl in dir/*
do
  grep -q "$str" $fl && {
    ex $fl <<EDIT
1,$ s/$old_str/$new_str/g
w!
EDIT
  }
done

Hi

Your input was very helpful and it works.
My requirement is that i will input a text and it will search in all the files in a directory and after which it will ask for the text need to be replaced and once i provide the new text it will replace it in all the files it found.
