Help to compare umask of different users.

hi i am trying to compare the usmask of an user.i m getting an error while doing the comaparison.The code i am using is
Code:
    val=`su - user -c "umask" | tail -2 | sed -n "/[0-9]/p"`
    if [ $val -eq 744 ]
    then
       echo "477 found."
    fi

When i execute this i am getiin an error like:

 sh: ^[H: A test command parameter is not valid.

I've tried with = in the comapre command.Still not workin.

Please give any suggestions.

What type of shell do you use?
Add set -x at the start of the script and set +x at the end of it.

Post the output of this when executing it, using code tags.

Help to compare umask of diffrent users.

I am using bash sh shell.

after giving the set -x command the output is something like this:

+ + su - test -c umask
+ grep -v logout
+ tail -2
02
02 -eq 02 ]
emh.sh[4]: ^M^[[3g^M ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H ^[H^M02: Syntax error

Looks to me as if you have some ^M in there plus some others which cause the trouble.
Do you write this script on a Windows box?
Else your code syntax looks fine.
